Ice formations can become quite large as spray from the waves in more turbulent areas of the shore continue to add new growth.

An ore freighter passing by Croftville Road Cottages. Although ore freighters and other ships can be seen throughout most the year, they are seen most frequently during late fall and early winter when they stay closer to the shore near Grand Marais.

Near Croftville Road...
Take a walk along Croftville Road known as the "walking road". Usually one will see more walkers than cars on this small road. It is a 1.5 mile stretch of the original North Shore Highway that winds closely to the shore of Lake Superior offering magnificent vistas at every turn.
The Shore
Hike along the ruggedly beautiful shoreline. Enjoy stunning sunrises over the lake. Throw or skip some rocks. Find that special small rock to pick or that perfect large rock to sit on and warm yourself in the sun. Lake Superior is so close you can reach out and touch its icy waters.
Pincushion Mountain
Park in the Pincushion Lot 3 miles up the Gunflint Trail from Grand Marais. Hike the Superior Hiking Trail to Pincushion Mountain. Pincushion Mountain provides panoramic views up and down the shoreline for miles. Continue on the Superior Hiking Trail to explore the gorge created by Devil's Track River.
A Well Deserved Nap
Doze off in the lakeside bedroom to the rhythm of breaking waves with the spectacular view of Lake Superior spread out at your feet. Nap in a patio chair being awakened by a large wave hitting the rocks.
